Southern stars shine at restaurant awards
Restaurants from the South West have taken out major categories at one of the state’s most significant industry awards.
Rústico at Hay Shed Hill has been named winner of the Tourism Restaurant category of the Restaurant & Catering Hostplus Awards for Excellence, announced last week in Perth. Restaurant and Catering is the peak body representing Australia’s restaurant, cafe and catering industry; its annual Awards for Excellence represent coveted recognition from industry peers.

Rústico at Hay Shed Hill nudged out other finalists Emily Taylor @ Warders Hotel in Fremantle and Sandalford Wines Restaurant at Caversham to grab the prestigious award.
Other local restaurants recognised at this year’s Awards for Excellence include Dunsborough’s Blue Manna Bistro (Restaurant of the Year) and Bunbury’s Market Eating House, which won the category “Specialty Restaurant”.
According to R&CA, the annual Awards for Excellence “give restaurants, cafes and caterers well-deserved recognition for their hard work, exceptional food and outstanding service in this vibrant industry.
The Awards recognise operators state-wide; category winners go through to the national awards. “Needless to say we’re thrilled about the gong,” said Rústico’s owner Vanessa Phillipson, who launched the Wilyabrup vineyard restaurant in 2016.
“Peer recognition is particularly special and this category recognises the significance of tourism to our sector, and vice versa,” she said. “Tourism doesn’t exist without great places to experience the food and wine of the region and we, in turn, thrive on the huge numbers of tourists, both domestic and international, we see in our region and at our table.”
Category winners now go through to the national Restaurant & Catering Hostplus Awards for Excellence to one held in Sydney in October.
